This is a bimetal defrost thermostat for your refrigerator. It stops the fridge from overheating during the defrost cycle by protecting the evaporator. This clip-on thermostat will sense the temperature increase in the evaporator during the defrost process, and will cycle the defrost heater off after the ice or frost is melted. The most common reasons for needing to replace this part are if your unit is leaking, has inconsistent temperatures (too hot or too cold), you are seeing buildup of ice, or your appliance is running too long.

The frost free feature of the freezer was freezing over with ice and cooling coils were being insulated with thickening frost which caused the cooling air to rise in temperature from -5 degrees to 20 degrees.

I troubleshot the problem by reading the electrical schematic and concluding the heating elements (defrost cables) were either defective or the bi-metal temp sensor was open. When closed the temp sensor completes the circuit for the current to flow through the heaters to defrost the cooling coils every 8 hours and then when the bimetal opens at 55 degrees the circuit is open and the coils are cooled because the refridgeration motor is in run mode. A timer between the motor and heater elements also was defective. The timer controls the cooling period and the defrost period. I ohmed out each part according to the spec sheet of normal resistance of parts and thus the bimetal and timer were defective. I gather a surge of some duration and amplitude affected these parts because a storm 24 hours prior to refridgerator problem had passsed through the area and the AC electrical power had oscillated several times during that event. I used hand tools to do the repair. If you are not mechanically inclined a step by step proceedure would be moot. It is a matter of disassembly and assembly paying close attention to fragile parts. No ice in ice trey

The easiest thing to do was pull the ice make off. After taking the 3 screws out of the wall of the freezer, take a screwdriver (flathead) and push on the tab for the electrical plug and wiggle the cord out. Then you can take 3 screws out for the main cover and another 2 screws on the next cover. There's the part, pop it out and replace holding pins and start the process of putting back together the opposite way you took it apart. Read more...

I removed control knobs and a couple of screws and forced the assembly down enough to remove the old thermostat, and insert the new one. Lucky me it was a identical replacement item. Job took about an hour. Read more...

defrost t-stat failed, defrost heater stayed energized and freezer could not pull down to temp

Unplugged refrigerator, removevd 4 hex head screws in rear panel of freezer. Gently pull panel forward and rotate panel to left side of freezer to expose coil. (If you have an ice maker you will have to remove this unit first) If no ice maker plastic plug will fall out of panel when you pull it forward. Set aside it aside.
Disconnect heater connections. (1) wire on each end of heater. Disconnected (2) wires that connect defrost t-stat. Removed (2) metal clips that hold defrost heater shield and defrost heater to coil..
pulled t-stat off of refrigerant line on right end and replaced with new. (It is only a little spring clip that is part of the t-stat) Replaced defrost heater. Reversed un-install procedure for metal clips and wiring. Gently plug wires in (do not pull on wires) Put rear panel back in place, put in the 4 screws , hand tighten only (just to snug) gently push on panel to make sure it is back as far as it will go..check screw tension again. Put plastic plug back in drain hole or re-install ice maker. Plug the refrigerator back in. This should not take you more than 30 min. max. I do not have an ice maker so it only took me 15 min. Coils frozen in refrigerator

Cooling coils froze up. Removed back panel in freezer section. After thawing coils, manually advanced defrost timer to check if fan stopped and defrost (heat) strips energized. Fan did stop, but heating strips did not energize to thaw coils. Used electrical meter to determine circuit was open at defrost thermostat. Ordered replacement and installed in about 20 minutes.
