Kenmore Washer Dryer Combo D-Shaped Knob Insert
Don NOT ram it on the selector stem. When it's seated, don't push any more. That's all there is to it. It works. If the pointer on the knob indicates the selector is lined up correctly, but it isn't, the problem is the selector, not the knob. Read more...

The main knob insert snapped.
Nothing to it. Just remember to put the insert in the knob, NOT on the selector stem. Line up the flat part of the insert with the flat part of the stem and push the knob in place. I then removed the drain hose from the wall drain to allow me to turn the washer to gain access to the the back panel.
From the front, I then removed the plastic timer knob from the timer by unscrewing it. Then I pulled the plastic plate with the arrow on it to remove it. This exposed the screws that attached the timer to the control panel. I left them attached.
I then removed the two screws on the bottom of the front of the control panel (on each end) that attach the control panel to the washer.
I then went to the rear of the washer and removed the two screws on the top of the rear of the control panel.
I went back to the front and pulled the control panel forward and up to release it from the washer.
I then removed the two screws (that were under the plastic plate) that attached the timer to the panel and removed the timer from the panel.
Then I unplugged the wiring harness from the timer and removed the timer completely.
From there I reversed the procedure to install the new timer and knob. Read more...

Washer would not wash on "normal" cycle. Had to play with the knob to get it to run at all. Washer would not drain properly either.

Timer knob broke
I went online with Model number and put in a search for a timer knob. The piece I ordered turned out to be the timer knob for the washer (stackable washer/dryer unit). I called and ordered the correct part and had to mail back the 1st one. I learned that it is better to speak with a person when ordering parts to make sure you are getting the correct on. You can avoid a lot of expense for postage this way. Once I had it, it was just a matter of sliding it on to the metal post on the dryer.
