Washer would fill and stop, would not agitate; advance the cycles
First I went to the Whirlpool site and downloaded the illustrated parts list for this model (a PDF file).

Seeing the part number, I then ordered the part from PartSelect.com.

While waiting for the part I tried to research how to remove the timer knob, but none of the online help I found was correct- the knob does not unscrew, but is held in place by a black plastic "keeper" on the back of the timer. The removal instructions are printed on the timer.

When the timer arrived I unscrewed the 2 screws at the back and edge of the console panel. Then the panel lifts up and out, exposing the timer. I released the knob, then removed a small screw beneath the knob that holds the timer.

Then I unplugged the wiring harness from the timer and removed it. I then reversed these procedures and installed the new timer.

As it turned out, the problem was not with the timer at all, but rather a defective lid switch, which is also located under the console panel.

Once I replaced the lid switch (very easy), the washer worked perfectly again.

Despite my imperfect initial diagnosis, a very satisfying experience.

Thanks for the great service.

Rick

timer bad no spin
design was on my side. the washer was structured that when you removed the screws that held down the upper timer cover, it would pivot rearward and you could gain access to the switch. you would carfully remove the knob set pin. remove knob, remove retaining screw. Slide timer sideways out of the engagement groove. remove wire connector. and with the new timer, do in reverse order. awesome site which was the ONLY site I actually found my model number for such an old washer. It even had the schematic that helped identify the assembly process. I will do business now the parts select for all my appliance needs for parts. Read more...

washer not cycling or working on all cycles.
On my model You have to first lift the control panel in order to remove timer knob.I removed control panel by prying on the ends of panel one at a time with putty knife and rag to keep from scratching washer. I then use needle nose pliers to pull plastic under side of knob while pulling on knob which is the trickiest part of the job as knob will not come of til it is pulled from underside with needle nose pliers to release it then its easy from that point to disconnect wires and slide timer to the left to unlock it and in stall new timer. You have to take your time doing the repair and it will work out better for you. After replacing timer machine works on all cycles and completes entire cycle. Problem with cycles stopping at the wrong point, problems with water temp.
The video for the water inlet valve/solenoid is excellent to show you how to get the top off so you can get to the timer. Then just two tips:

1) when you pull the existing knob off the front per the instructions on the new timer, there is a small screw on the face of the top unit, next to the timer spindle, that must be removed - otherwise the timer won't slide out from under the tabs. Then, looking at the existing timer from behind, there is a thin tab on the left that needs to be lifted up about 1/8", which will allow you to slide the timer unit to the left about 1/4" to get out from the 3 other tabs, and lift it out.

2) be very careful to line up the timing marks for the timer (old and new) and the knob markings, otherwise the cycle text on the actual face of the top unit won't line up correctly with what the knob is pointing to, and nothing will seem to work right!

Ultimately, for us, the problem ended up being the water intake valve, but I think the above will help anyone with a timer issue.
